Men's Basketball Loses a Heartbreaker to Saint Joseph's in Overtime, 66-65
12.13.15 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - After tying the score to force overtime, Temple men's basketball came up one point short against Saint Joseph's in a heartbreaking 66-65 Philadelphia Big 5 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Liacouras Center. Sophomore Obi Enechionyia and junior Josh Brown both had big nights for the Owls, recording their first career double-doubles.
The ball was in Enechionyia's hands after a rebound in the final seconds of overtime, but despite hitting 4-of-6 from long range to that point, his seventh attempt missed as time expired.
Enechionyia scored a career and game-high 25 points to go with a career and team-high 13 rebounds, while Brown added a career-high 12 rebounds to a season-high 13 points.
Senior Quenton Decosey's dunk with 12 seconds left in regulation forced the overtime period after Temple (4-5, 1-1 Big 5) had trailed by as many as nine points early in the second half. The game was close for the majority, with nine ties and 10 lead changes overall.
DeCosey was Temple's third double-figure scorer, recording 13 points to go with seven boards.
Saint Joseph's (7-2, 1-1 Big 5) got 17 points and 13 rebounds from DeAndre' Bembry, while the Hawks also got a double-double from Isaiah Miles with 12 points and a game-high 15 boards.
The first half started slow for both teams, with the Hawks making one of their first seven shots and the Owls going 1-for-9. Enechionyia's first three-pointer was followed by a DeCosey dunk, giving Temple a 9-5 lead at 14:26.
The Owls kept a slim lead for the majority of the half until near the four-minute mark. The game's third tie at 28-28 came with 4:20 left, and Saint Joseph's then took the lead the rest of the way. The Hawks' largest lead was just four, and they held a slim 34-32 advantage at the break.
Enechionyia hit 3-of-4 from long range in the first half, and was the game's only player in double figures at halftime with 12 points.
The second half saw two early ties before the Hawks surged ahead with a 9-0 run, taking their largest lead of nine points, 45-36 at 14:24. Daniel Dingle broke up the run with a layup, and Enechionyia scored seven of the Owls' next nine points to get them back in the game.
Enechionyia's fourth trey of the game put Temple within two, and a Jaylen Bond layup at 6:22 tied it up at 49-49. Two more ties followed, the second at 54-54 before the Hawks took a four-point lead with just over a minute and a half remaining. Converting a three-point play, Enechionyia got the Owls back within a point before a three-pointer fell for the Hawks at the other end.
With 50 seconds left, Brown put the Owls back within a bucket and Temple called a timeout. Bembry missed a pair at the line for Saint Joseph's, and a DeCosey dunk with 12 seconds left was enough for Temple to send the game into overtime.
The Owls took a three-point lead early in overtime on an Enechionyia jumper, but the Hawks scored the next five points for a 66-64 lead with 2:13 left. Enechionyia hit one of two at the line with a minute left to get Temple within a point.
Brown stole the ball at the other end, but stepped out of bounds back on Temple's end of the court. The Hawks got the ball back with 36 seconds remaining, eventually calling timeout with 16 seconds left. They missed a trey with the shot clock about to expire, and Enechionyia collected the rebound but missed a three-pointer at the other end as the game clock ran out.
Temple will have nearly a week off before its next game, a 4 p.m. home contest against Delaware State on Saturday, Dec. 19 (ESPN3/1210 AM WPHT).
