Sophomore epeeist Rachael Clark
Tenth-Ranked Fencing Finishes 8-4 at the Northwestern Duals
2.1.15 | Women's Fencing
EVANSTON, Ill. - After an intense two days of competition, the 10th-ranked Temple fencing team finished the Northwestern Duals with an overall record of 8-4 to bring its season record to 18-8. The Owls' only losses at the meet were to teams ranked higher than them, with Sunday's losses coming against #3 Princeton and #9 Northwestern.
"This was a tough two-day meet against a lot of strong teams," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "We definitely thought we could have done better in some cases, but we're nursing a lot of injuries, especially today. That doesn't take away from what we were able to accomplish, though. Having the girls fence that much in two days is great preparation for the rest of the season and helps them to see how they continue to improve. Hopefully we'll get everyone healthy soon, but we learned a lot this weekend and that will help us to keep getting better."Â
Over two days and a total of 12 matches, freshman epeeist Safa Ibrahim was Temple's top performer with an overall record of 28-7. Ibrahim went 12-5 on day two with undefeated records of 3-0 against Detroit Mercy, UC San Diego and Lawrence. She went 2-0 against Stanford and won one of her bouts against #3 Princeton.
Also going 12-5 on day two, and 23-8 overall, was sophomore epeeist Rachael Clark. For foil, junior squad leader Fatima Largaespada was a strong performer with an overall record of 18-13, while fellow junior Demi Antipas was 12-13. In sabre, junior Gloria Aguilar was 17-7 overall while senior and team captain Lauren Rangel-Friedman finished at 20-11.
The Owls started the second day with a strong 19-8 win over Stanford, taking victories in all three weapons including a 9-0 mark for the foil squad. They then earned a decisive victory over Detroit Mercy, 26-1. The foil squad was undefeated with a 9-0 record against Stanford, while the sabre and epee squads both pulled out hard-fought, 5-4 wins. Ibrahim was perfect for epee at 3-0, as were Largaespada, Mariah Slagle and Becca Stanford for foil. Both foil and epee were 9-0 against Detroit Mercy.
The ninth-ranked host Northwestern Wildcats handed Temple its first loss of the day, 20-7. Clark was 2-1 for epee against Northwestern, while Aguilar was 2-1 for sabre.
The Owls rebounded with a 15-12 win over UC San Diego, with the epee squad winning 7-2. Ibrahim was perfect at 3-0 for epee, as was Largaespada for the foil squad. Antipas was 2-1 in foil, while Aguilar went 2-0 in sabre.
The third-ranked Princeton Tigers won 19-8 against Temple, but Clark was strong yet again with a record of 2-1 in epee.
The Owls' final match ended in a 24-3 victory over Lawrence, with both the sabre and epee squads winning 9-0. Aguilar, Olivia Wynn and Victoria Suber were all 3-0 for sabre, while Jessica Hall, Clark and Ibrahim were all 3-0 for epee. Largaespada was perfect for the foil squad at 3-0.
