Women's Tennis Defeats Binghamton, 5-2

2.13.15 | Women's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA- Continuing on a hot streak, the women's tennis team defeated Binghamton, 5-2 on February 13. The team has now won four consecutive matches.

Head coach Steve Mauro was very pleased with the way the team has been showing their strengths in the way they've been playing.

"It was a great win today. We started out strong in doubles and the girls continued with their efforts throughout singles," Mauro said. "The girls played hard and we're really happy with the way they've been playing."

Doubles was a sweep for the Owls, as Monet Stuckey-Willis and Anais Nussaume defeated Binghamton's Agatha Ambrozy and Katherine Medianik, 7-5 at the second flight. To clinch the point, Mariana Bedon and Minami Okajima won 6-4 against BU's Annie DiMuro and Olga Ostrovetsky at the third flight. Temple's Alina Abdurakhimova and Yana Khon were in the lead at flight one, 5-4, but play was suspended.

Singles was another showing of strong play by the Owls, who won four of the six flights, all in straight-set victories.

"It's really been a strong group effort that's been helping us win our matches," Mauro said.

Freshman Abdurakhimova continued on her streak, winning her sixth consecutive straight-set victory at the first flight, defeating Alexis Tashiro, 6-1, 6-1. Coach Mauro has been impressed with Abdurakhimova, noting she's been "playing some phenomenal tennis."

Sophomore Anais Nussaume held up the fourth flight, winning 6-0, 7-5 against BU's Shea Brodsky, while Stuckey-Willis clinched the match for Temple at the fifth flight over Medianik, 7-6(3), 6-1. Khon was able to get the fifth point for the Owls at the third flight, defeating DiMuro, 7-6(1), 6-3.

The Owls (6-2) will host the Albany Great Danes tomorrow at Upper Dublin Sports Center in Ambler, Pa. Play is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
