RICHMOND, Va. - Freshmen Safa Ibrahim and Becca Stanford both turned in top-10 and top-20 finishes, respectively, while representing #10 Temple at the USFA Junior Olympics. Ibrahim placed sixth in junior women's epee on Monday while Stanford tied for 19th in junior women's foil on Friday.
Â
Ibrahim turned in a 6-0 performance in the pool round before going on to finish sixth out of 187 fencers. The opponent she faced in the round of eight, Amanda Sirico, went on to take first place. To advance to the final eight, Ibrahim beat #4 Harvard's Claire Dinhut by a score of 15-13.
"Safa competed in three national events this season and placed in the top eight all three times," said assistant coach/epee coach Anastasia Ferdman. "She was aware that this was her last junior event before she ages out, and she did a really good job overcoming her nerves and keeping her composure. She was fighting all day and showed a lot of consistency. Today was a great day for her and I was really proud of her."
On Friday, Feb. 13, Stanford competed in junior women's foil and tied for 19th out of 176 competitors. She was also a perfect 6-0 in the opening pool round before ultimately falling to the sixth-place finisher in the elmination round.
Next up for the Owls is their own Temple Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 21. Joining Temple in McGonigle Hall will be teams from Penn, Penn State, Brown, Princeton and St. John's.
