PHILADELPHIA - In a number of matches that came down to the last couple of bouts, #10 Temple fencing unfortunately ended up on the wrong end as the Owls went 1-3 at their own Temple Invitational on Saturday. Temple beat Brown 23-4 and suffered one or three-point losses to three nationally ranked teams.
The Owls very narrowly lost by a score of 14-13 against both #3 Princeton and #9 St. John's, and lost 15-12 to #6 Penn State.
Prior to the meet, Temple honored its lone senior Lauren Rangel-Friedman for Senior Day, while also acknowledging second-year graduate extern Holly Spicer. Temple then had a first-round bye before its first match against Princeton.
"I think the girls fought through a lot today," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "We had girls with the flu, girls who were injured, and they worked very hard today. I couldn't ask anything more of them. I think they know they're competitive with the best and we were in every match. The ones we lost all went down to the wire. With a little bit of luck we would have won those matches. Even though they're disappointed, hopefully that gives us some confidence going into the postseason."
The Owls' best record of the day came from freshman epeeist Safa Ibrahim, who went 9-3 overall. Ibrahim finished 2-1 against #3 Princeton, and was undefeated in the Owls' final match of the day against #6 Penn State, going 3-0 and helping epee beat the Lions by a score of 5-4.
For the foil squad, both Fatima Largaespada and Becca Stanford went 6-3. Largaespada was 2-1 vs. both #3 Princeton and #6 Penn State, while Stanford was also 2-1 against Princeton. Demi Antipas finished at 6-4 for foil, including a 2-0 record against Princeton.
Next up for Temple is the NIWFA Championship next Saturday, Feb. 28 in Easton, Pa. on the campus of Lafayette. The Owls will be looking to win their 19th straight NIWFA title.
