Women's Basketball Plays at SMU on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team heads to Dallas, Texas for its second-to-last road trip of the regular season. The Owls will play at SMU on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST at Moody Coliseum.
Temple is 9-6 in conference play with a 13-15 overall mark. The Owls had won two-straight games before falling on the road to USF, a team receiving votes in both national polls.
Against USF, Temple Owls shot just 26.9% (18-67) from the field, while USF went 29-for-60 to finish near 50%. The Bulls also out-rebounded Temple grabbing 48 boards to the Owls' 26. Senior Tyonna Williams led the cherry and white with 17 points, while adding three assists, three boards and a steal. Sophomore Feyonda Fitzgerald scored 15 points with three boards and a pair of steals. Freshman Tanaya Atkinson pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds, adding five points and three steals. Rounding out the box score, junior Erica Covile had six points, while freshman Alliya Butts added five.
Butts leads the Owls in scoring with 12.7 points per game, a number that rises to 15.5 points per outing in conference play. Fitzgerald has come off the bench in the last 15 games and is averaging 11.4 points a contest, while dishing out 77 total assists. Junior Erica Covile and Atkinson are key players on both sides of the ball for Temple, with Covile averaging 11.3 points and a team-best 8.6 boards per game, while Atkinson averages 10.5 points and 7.1 boards per game. Senior Tyonna Williams is averaging 10.1 points per game and is leading the team with 86 total assists.
Temple's field goal percentage was on the rise before a poor shooting performance against USF. The Owls have made 36.5% from the field and are shooting 32% from three and 71.2% from the free throw line. Temple is being out-scored and out-rebounded by slim margins on the season, with opponents averaging 0.4 points and 0.7 rebounds more than the Owls.

SMU took the lead 5:48 into the game and did not relinquish. Freshman forward Keely Froling has 13 points and seven rebounds, while junior Destynee Hives-McCray added 10 points and five boards.
For the season, Froling averages of 12.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, and she holds the team-high with 49 total blocks. Hives-McCray records 9.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, while guard Kiara Perry leads the team and is fourth in the American with 39 total steals. The Mustangs average 56.2 points per game, yet yield 67.2 points per game to opponents. SMU shoots 34.8% from the field, but only 24.2 percent from beyond the 3-point line.
