Tenth-Ranked Fencing Wins All Five Duals at the FDU Meet

TEANECK, N.J. - For a second time this season, #10 Temple fencing went undefeated on a day of dual meet competition. The Owls (23-8) were a perfect 5-0 at the FDU Meet on Sunday, beating their five opponents by an average of over 15 points.
Temple beat Brandeis 22-5 to start the day, then had a perfect 27-0 win against NJIT. The Owls then defeated Stevens 21-6 and host FDU 20-7 before finishing the day with a 16-11 win over Johns Hopkins. The Owls' epee squad posted the best overall record of the day at 37-8, going undefeated against NJIT and dropping just one bout to Stevens.
The foil squad's top two fencers for the day were junior and squad leader Fatima Largaespada at 11-2, and freshman Becca Stanford at 9-1. Largaespada went 3-0 against both FDU and Brandeis, while Stanford did so against Stevens and Brandeis.
For the epee squad, sophomore Rachael Clark went 13-2, while junior squad leader Jessica Hall and freshman Safa Ibrahim went 12-3. Hall was undefeated against Johns Hopkins, NJIT and Stevens, while Clark was undefeated against FDU, NJIT and Stevens.
The sabre squad got an undefeated 8-0 record from sophomore Victoria Suber, while junior Gloria Aguilar went 8-1. Suber was 3-0 against both NJIT and FDU, while Aguilar went 3-0 against Brandeis and FDU.
"We've been working hard in practice this week and the things we've been working on were evident this weekend," said head coach Nikki Franke. "All of the teams we faced today were a good challenge for us, and the girls were very sharp today. I was pleased with our overall level of fencing."
Temple will have some fencers participate in next weekend's Junior Olympics in Richmond, Va., and the Owls will host the Temple Invitational the following weekend on Feb. 21.
