PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team continues its road trip with a Tuesday match-up at Tulsa. The Owls (11-13, 7-4 American) will battle the Golden Hurricane (12-10, 7-4 American) in a match-up of two teams tied for fourth-place in the American. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.Â
The Owls are coming off a 77-64 loss to third-place Tulane on Saturday. The Green Wave shot 49.2% for the game, holding the Owls to 36.7% from the field and just 12.5% from three-point range. One game after making a program-record 15 three pointers, the Owls went cold from deep, only hitting 3-of-24, while going 0-10 in the second half.
Junior Erica Covile led the Owls with 20 points, while also pulling down seven rebounds with two assists and two steals. Freshman Alliya Butts scored 19 points with three steals, while classmate Tanaya Atkinson had 12 points nine rebounds, and three steals. Rounding out the box score for Temple, senior Tyonna Williams had five points and four assists.Â
The Owls have a balanced offense that can count on five different players to lead the team in scoring. Butts heads the group with 12.4 points per game, while Covile averages 11.5 points. Butts leads the team with 51 steals, while Covile tops the Owls with 9.2 boards per game and is second with 39 steals. Sophomore Feyonda Fitzgerald averages 11.2 points and 2.6 assists per game, while Atkinson scores 10.8 points per game with 7.1 rebounds per game. Rounding out the individual leaders, Williams averages 10.0 points and a team-best 3.1 assists per game.Â
Temple shoots 36% from the field and 31.4% from beyond-the-arc. The Owls are also shooting over 70% from the foul line. After a 14-point loss to Tulane, Temple's scoring margin is at zero, with the Owls scoring and giving up 66.6 points per game. Rebounding numbers are similarly close, with Temple being out-rebounded by just 0.1 boards per outing.Â
Tulane is riding a four-game win streak, most recently picking up a 67-51 win over Houston on the road. Against the Cougars, Mariah Turner had a double-double and two others scored in double figures to lead Tulsa. Turner had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Ashley Clark tallied a game-best 18 points, nine rebounds (all defensive) and three assists. Kadan Brady added 12 points and Teanna Reid posted a team-leading four steals. Tulsa shot 45% from the field, but just 18% from behind the arc (2-of-11).Â
On the season, Tulsa has a number of scoring threats, led by Clark, who puts up 13.9 points per game, while also averaging a team-best 7.3 boards a contest. Turner averages 12.8 points per outing, while Kelsee Grovey contributes 9.7. Brady and Teanna Reid can also be counted on to score, both averaging near 8.0 points per game. Four players average over 2.3 assists per contest, led by Reid, who has totaled 69 on the season. Defensively, Brady has 40 steals, while Reid has 36 and Grovey has 35.Â
The Golden Hurricane shoot 42.7% from the field, but allow opponents to shoot 43.6%. Tulsa has made 34.5% of three pointers and shoot 69.9% from the charity stripe. The Hurricane are out-scoring opponents by 1.7 points per game, but are being out-rebounded by over four boards per contest.Â
This will be the first meeting between the programs. Tulsa joined the American Athletic Conference for 2014-15, after spending nine seasons as a member of Conference-USA.
