Women's Basketball Closes Regular Season at Houston on Monday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team closes out the regular season on Monday, heading to Houston for an 8:00 p.m. EST match-up broadcast by the American Digital Network. The Owls (15-15, 11-6 American) can finish as high as third in the conference with a win over Houston (6-22, 1-16 American).Â
Temple enters Monday's game having won five out of its last six games. The Owls are 15-15 overall and are coming off a thrilling 79-69 victory over East Carolina in their home finale. Against ECU, the Owls rebounded from a slow start, taking a one-point deficit into the locker room before shooting 52.2% from the field, 50% from the line and 86.4% from three-point range in the second half. Junior Erica Covile tied for game-high honors with 22 points, also grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman Alliya Butts had 16 points, while Williams had 13 points and three assists in her final home game in Philadelphia.Â
The Owls have five players averaging in double-figures, counting on any one of them to take over as high scorer in a game. Butts leads the squad with 12.9 points per game and 60 total  steals. Covile contributes 11.4 points and a team-best 8.5 rebounds per outing, while also recording 52 steals and 18 blocks. Sophomore Feyonda Fitzgerald has come off the bench in the last 17 games and is averaging 10.9 points a contest, while dishing out 83 total assists. Freshman Tanaya Atkinson averages 10.5 points and 7.0 boards per game, while Williams is averaging 10.1 points per game and is leading the team with 95 total assists.
Temple shoots 36.6% from the field and 32.1% from beyond-the-arc. The Owls free throw percentage ranks first in the conference, with Temple connecting on 72.3% of all attempts from the line. Temple averages 66.4 points per game, while giving up 65.9. The Owls averages 40.2 boards per game, while giving up the same amount, but force 1.9 more turnovers per game then they give up themselves.Â
After starting 5-5, Houston has lost 17 out of its last 18 games, including 14 in a row. Most recently, the Cougars fell on the road to UCF, 59-38. At UCF, the game was a defensive struggle throughout the first half, as the teams combined to shoot 32.2 percent and turn the ball over 23 times in the opening period. But UCF found their offensive footing after halftime to earn the win. For Houston, Mariah Mitchell finished 4-for-8 from the field to total 12 points, while Marche' Amerson added 11. Jessieka Palmer chipped in with nine points, and Tyler Gilbert pulled down eight rebounds.
For the season, Palmer leads Houston with 9.5 points per game, while also pulling down 4.7 rebounds per game. Marche' contributes 9.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per outing, while Alecia Smith has a team-high 92 assists, to go along with 7.1 points per game. Gilbert leads the Cougars on the boards with 6.0 rebounds per game and 59 total blocks, while also chipping in on offense with 7.8 points per game.
Houston shoots 34.8% from the field, 28.0% from three-point range, while making 65.5% of its free throws. The Cougars are being out-scored by an average of 13.2 points per game and out-rebounded by 8.9 boards per game.
