Men's Tennis Defeats Lehigh, 5-2
3.24.15 | Men's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – After a slow start to their match, the men's tennis team stormed back to take down visiting Lehigh, 5-2 on Tuesday.
Head Coach Steve Mauro was extremely pleased with how the team rebounded during today's match to pick up the victory.
"The guys started a little slow today in doubles, but they picked it up in their singles matches. We played strong in all six positions and it was a strong performance by the whole team, particularly after losing the doubles point," said Mauro. "I was particularly happy with Santiago Canete, who was feeling a little under the weather but played a strong match at number one."
Doubles was a tough battle, with the Mountain Hawks taking the point in the end. Temple's Canete and Vineet Naran were able to capture a 6-1 win at the second flight over Mitchell Petersen and Ethan Bogard. However, Lehigh's Jack Petersen and Graham Lehman evened up the tally at the third flight, defeating Ian Glessing and Maros Januvka, 6-4. The final flight ended in a 7-6(4) victory for Lehigh, with Ben Gilman and Jeremy Kochman edging out Hicham Belkssir and Nicolas Paulus.
The singles competition proved to be the turning point for the Owls, as they captured victories in five of the six flights. Belkssir captured a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jack Petersen at the third flight, while Naran defeated Mitchell Petersen 6-4, 6-2 at the fourth flight.
Paulus picked up his 48th career singles victory at the second flight, taking down Kochman, 6-4, 6-2; Paulus needs four more wins to pass Kacper Rams (51 career single victories) for fourth all-time since 2001. The clinching win for Temple came from a hard fought battle between Canete and Gilman at the first flight, with Canete coming out victorious with the 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. Filip Stipcic also picked up a victory at the fifth flight, defeating Bogard 7-6(2), 6-2.
The Owls (10-8, 0-2 The American) will face Connecticut in their final American Athletic Conference match at TU Pavilion on March 28 at 10 a.m.
