Butts and Covile earned All-Big 5 Honors

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Alliya Butts highlighted the Philadelphia Big 5 awards for the Temple women's basketball team, earning Rookie of the Year honors as well as nabbing a spot on the All-Big 5 team. Temple junior Erica Covile also earned All-Big 5 honors, when the awards were announced earlier today.
Butts is having a standout rookie season for the Owls, leading the team in scoring, steals, and threes. She averages 12.4 points a contest, while racking up 68 total steals and connecting on 63 shots from beyond-the-arc. Butts is also third on the team with 69 total assists, and has racked up 23 double-digit scoring performances. The Edgewater Park, N.J. appeared on the Big 5 Weekly Honor Roll five times this season.
Covile earns her first All-Big five award, and is in the midst of a breakout season for the Owls. Hailing from Detroit, Mich., she appears all over the stat sheet for Temple, ranking first rebounding (8.4 rpg), and second in scoring (11.6), steals (61), and blocks (21). Covile has a team-high nine double-doubles this season, including a pair against UConn, the ony two given up by the No. 1 Huskies this season. The combo guard was named the Big 5 Player of the Week twice this season, and also earned Temple's first ever American Athletic Conference Player of the Week nod.Â
Villanova standout Caroline Coyer was named the 2014-2015 Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Year, while Penn head coach Mike McLaughlin earned Coach of the Year honors. Sarah Fairbanks of Saint Joseph's garnered Most Improved Player accolades, while Emily Leer from Villanova was the Scholar Athlete of the Year.Â
