3.27.15 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - The BIG EAST season has arrived for Temple lacrosse, and the Owls will take their 8-1 record and five-game win streak into their opener, a 1:00 p.m. home contest against #8/8 Florida on Saturday, March 28. Watch a video preview HERE featuring head coach Bonnie Rosen and student-athletes Jaqi Kakalecik and Nicole Tiernan.
Temple's 8-1 start in 2015 is the best start for the program since the 1997 team also started at 8-1 before losing a second game. The Owls, currently riding a five-game win streak, have proven their ability to win close games this season. Four of their wins have been by a single goal, with two of those coming in overtime. Two other wins have been by two goals in regulation.
Leading the Owls offensively is Tiernan with 26 goals, freshman attacker Nicole Barretta with 11 goals and junior attacker Kathryn Skahan with 10 goals. Tiernan scored a career-high six goals in Temple's 11-6 win at #19 Delaware on March 14, and has already notched five hat tricks this season. The Delaware game was the most recent for Temple, as a scheduled home game against Denver on March 20 was canceled due to snow.
Tiernan has twice been named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week already this season, while goalkeeper Kakalecik was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week once. Kakalecik recorded a career-high 13 saves to help the Owls take down nationally ranked Delaware.
The Owls trail 2-0 to Florida in the all-time series, with the last game being a 20-3 loss at #5 Florida on March 10, 2012.  Florida is led by senior attacker and two-time All-American Shannon Gilroy, who currently leads the team and the BIG EAST Conference with 39 goals and 39 draw controls. Gilroy is also Florida's assist leader with 13.
Head coach of Florida Amanda O'Leary (Mandee Moore) was a three-time All-American for Temple, graduating in 1988 after leading the Owls to the NCAA title that season.
