PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Temple women's basketball players Erica Covile, Alliya Butts, and Tyonna Williams have earned regular season awards from the American Athletic Conference, as announced by the conference office on Thursday. Covile and Butts were named to the All-Conference team with Butts also earning a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Williams was announced as the American's Sportsmanship Award recipient. All awards were voted on by the league's 11 coaches.
Covile, a native of Detroit, Mich., had a breakout year for the Owls, earning her first All-Conference award, a third team selection. The junior guard was second on the team with 11.2 points per game, while leading the Owls on the boards with 8.4 rebounds a contest. She was also second on Temple in blocks (18) and steals (54), while ranking fourth in assists (54).
After not having a double-double her previous two seasons combined, Covile racked up nine during the regular season this year, including two against UConn, the only allowed by the Huskies this season. She also earned Temple's first ever American Player of the Week honors, winning the award on January 5, after a week in which she averaged 22.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game.
Butts had a standout rookie campaign for the Owls, earning All-Conference third team honors, while also making an appearance on the All-Freshman team, one of only two unanimous selections. The guard led Temple in scoring with 12.8 points per game, while also racking up a team-high 62 steals. During conference play, her offensive output rose to 15.2 points per game, ranking her fifth in the conference.
The Edgewater Park, N.J. native scored in double-figures in 14 of 18 conference games this season, recording a career-high 30 points in a win over Memphis. Butts was twice named the American Athletic Conference's Freshman of the Week, while appearing on the Weekly Honor Roll once.
Williams, hailing from Fort Washington, Md., earned the conference's Sportsmanship Award. The honor is reserved for the student-athlete that best reflects the ideals of sportsmanship -- ethical behavior, fair play and integrity – in collegiate basketball. Temple's lone senior on the roster, Williams stands out as a leader and a role model on and off the court. She is a dean's list student, has done countless hours of community service, and is a mentor to Temple's younger players.
In four seasons in cherry and white, Williams has appeared in 124 games for the Owls, making 95 career starts. She is second all-time on Temple's career three pointer list, connecting on 159 attempts from beyond-the-arc. Williams is also fifth all-time for the Owls in career assists, racking up 371 total helpers. The senior ranks 21st in scoring in Temple's storied history, totaling 993 career points so far in her career. Williams will graduate in May with a degree in criminal justice, and has aspirations of becoming a basketball coach.
The Temple women's basketball team is 16-15 overall and will open play in the American Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at noon at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Owls finished the regular season tied for third place, earning the fourth seed after tie-breaking procedures. Temple will square off against fifth-seeded East Carolina in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
