Streak Ends, but Matthews Still Ties for Third at Wolfpack Spring Open
4.19.15 | Men's Golf
RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior Brandon Matthews' streak of three straight tournament titles came to and end Sunday at the Wolfpack Spring Open, but the Temple golfer went down swinging. Â
Matthews shot a four-under 67, which was the second best round of the day at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course among the 77 competitors. Â It was nowhere near enough, however, to catch red-hot North Carolina State junior David Cooke, who carded a 65 to finish 10-under 132 for the two-day tournament. Â
Cooke bested his teammate and first round leader James Chapman, who finished second with a  seven-under 135.  Matthews, who started the day one-over, had three birdies and one eagle to tie for third with Penn's Patrick O'Leary with a three-under 139.
Host N.C. State won the event with a 17-under 551. Â The Wolfpack was followed by Maryland (568), Francis Marion (576), Penn (579), George Mason (581), Columbia (583), Temple (588), Navy (592), Valparaiso (594), Emory (603) and Dartmouth (615).
Senior Matt Teesdale (72-73, 145), who was tied with Matthews following Saturday's round, was three over for the tournament to tie for 22nd. Â Senior Patrick Ross (77-75) and freshman Evan Thornton (76-76) were next for the Owls and tied for 47th with 152s. Â Freshman Mark Farley (79-76) rounded out the Owls' five, tying for 56th with a 155.
Senior Alec Kissell (79-79, 158) and sophomore Evan Notaro (88-86, 174) also competed as individuals.
Temple closes out the regular season at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Golf Championships held April 26-28 at The Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida. Â
