PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's rowing team had a successful day of racing on Saturday, competing at the Kelly Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The annual event puts Temple up against Philadelphia rowing-foes, Drexel, Saint Joseph's, Philadelphia University, Villanova, and La Salle.
In five races, no Owl boat finished lower than third place. The novice eight boat continued its outstanding spring season, highlighting the racing with a first place finish. The cherry and white finished the 2,000-meter course in a time of 6:51.79, with the next-closest finisher over 11 seconds off their pace.
Temple recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in fours racing. The varsity four took second behind only Saint Joseph's, recording a time of 7:47.12 in the six-boat field. The Owls' freshmen four also nabbed second, clocking in at 7:55.2 finishing behind Saint Joseph's in the five-competitor race. Temple's second varsity four also fared well in the event, taking third in 7:59.1.
In varsity eight racing, the Owls nabbed a pair of third place finishes. In the varsity eight race, Temple used a sprint finish to overtake Saint Joseph's for third, recording a time of 6:45.79. The Owls were just off the pace of Drexel (6:36.29) and Villanova (6:44.79) in the five-boat field. In the second varsity eight race, the Owls also finished third, clocking in at 7:03.58.
Following the racing, Temple rowers gathered to watch the ROTC commissioning ceremony for sophomore rower, Kaitlin Grisanti, which was held on the banks of the Schuylkill. Coxswain Nicole Barth, also an ROTC member, was part of the ceremony.
The Owls will take next weekend off in preparation for the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill May 8 and 9. The event is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and Universities from the U.S. and Canada.
