Travis Mahoney Ranks 12th in the World in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase

PHILADELPHIA - Former Temple distance runner Travis Mahoney ('13) set an impressive personal-record time in the 3,000m Steeplechase last Thursday, May 14 at the Hoka One One Middle Distance Classic at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. His time of 8:27.08 is currently ranked No. 12 in the world.

"The entire Temple Track and Field family was incredibly excited to hear of Travis' race out in Los Angeles last week," said assistant coach James Snyder. "We watched him open up in the steeplechase at Princeton a few weeks ago in a race with Matt Kacyon and it's been fun to follow his progress since then. Travis is an incredible athlete and continues to be a wonderful ambassador for our men's distance running program."

Mahoney's time was fast enough to meet both the World Championships and Olympic Games time standards. In order to compete in either competition, athletes have to run this time standard along with placing in the top three at the US Outdoor National Championships this upcoming summer or at the 2016 Olympic Trials. Running the time standard before the qualifying meets is an advantage for Mahoney, as he will only have to race for place and not worry about also hitting the time standards.

"Travis' run is a top-15 mark in the world right now and eclipsed the World Championship and Olympic A Standard of 8:28.00," said Snyder. "I know he has some big goals for this summer and the build up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio."

The Old Bridge, N.J. native currently runs for the New Jersey New York Track Club, the East Coast's most successful professional track and road racing team. The club combines veteran athletes with fresh post-collegiate talent, consisting of both men and women ranging from the 800m to the 10,000m on the track with a number of cross country and road racing performers. At last year's USA Outdoor Championships, Mahoney placed 13th overall in the 3,000m Steeplechase.

Mahoney became Temple's first All-American in cross country on Nov. 17, 2012. It was the second time in that calendar year in which Mahoney had earned All-American honors, and he completed his career with a total of three All-America honors at Temple after earning two in track and field. Mahoney was also a seven-time Atlantic 10 Champion, three-time Atlantic 10 Outstanding Performer of the Year and the NCAA Men's Mid-Atlantic Athlete of the Year in 2012.
