PHILADELPHA — The Temple men's crew team won a pair of medals, including a gold from the lightweight four, highlighting an outstanding effort at the 2015 Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday. The Owls advanced three boats to the grand finals of the event, which was held for the 77th-straight time on the Schuylkill River.
Temple's lightweight four grabbed a gold medal with a pair of fast races today. In the morning, the Owls won their semifinal heat with a time of 6:36.836. The crew topped MIT, Michigan, Virginia, Rollins, and High Point. In the championship race, Temple topped the field with a time of 6:32.086 to secure a gold medal. The Owls defeated Fordham, Michigan, MIT, Delaware and Mercyhurst in the race.
The other Owl medal went to the second varsity eight, who earned silver after two solid races. In the semifinals, Temple topped the six-team field with a time of 5:50.928 to overtake Virginia, Bucknell, Saint Joseph's, Florida Tech, and Delaware. In the finals, the Owls were neck-in-neck with Drexel, finishing just .082 seconds behind the Dragons. Temple clocked in at 5:45.829, to race past Virginia, Michigan, Bucknell, and North Carolina.
Temple's varsity eight also had a great day of racing, finishing sixth overall in the deep field. In the morning's semifinals, the Owls took second behind only Florida Tech, recording a time of 5:47.847 to defeat North Carolina, Bucknell, Minnesota, and Fairfield. In the grand finals, Temple clocked in at 5:51.945 to take sixth place.
Also on Saturday, the freshman/novice eight and four boats also raced strong, each finishing in third place in the semifinals. The four was just .107 from advancing to the finals, clocking in at 6:56.892, ahead of Fairfield, Maryland, and North Carolina. The eight also took third, finishing in 6:12.350, defeating North Carolina, RIT, and DePaul.
The Owls now look ahead to the Intercollegiate Rowing Assoc. Championships. The four-day event will take place on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. on May 28 through 30.
