Two from Temple's men's crew team earned Academic All-Area accolades

Funck and Sipzner Named Academic All-Area for Men's Crew

PHILADELPHIA -- A pair of student-athletes from the Temple men's crew team earned Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area selections. Rising senior Kati Jordan Funck and recent graduate, Dan Sipzner, represented the Owls on the nine-person team.

Sipzner, a native of Guilford, N.Y., is a two-time recipient of the award. He graduated from Temple's Tyler School of Art in May with a concentration in metals, jewelry, and CAD-CAM. A member of the Owls varsity boats all season, Sipzner was the five seat in the second varsity boat that took silver at the 2015 Dad Vail Regatta. He also took silver at both the Murphy Cup and City Championships, and sat three seat in the gold-medal winning second-varsity eight boat at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. Sipzner boasted a 3.63 grade-point average and also took home the Owl Club Academic Award for men's crew in 2014.
 
Funck, an early childhood education major, served as a coxswain for the men's crew team all season. A member of Temple's Trustee Ten, she earned the highest grade-point average on the team, carrying a 3.82. Athletically, she earned Dad Vail gold, coxing the lightweight four boat, which also won their event at the Murphy Cup. Funck was at the helm of the gold-medal winning varsity four that won the City Championships, and the gold-medal winning second varsity eight at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. Funck was also part of the lightweight four effort that finished 12th nation at the 2015 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships. She hails from Annville, Pa.

The Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area teams are voted on by the sports information offices of the 29 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area, an athlete must be in at least her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
