Volleyball Again Recognized for Work in Classroom

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team earned yet another academic honor, this time being recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The Owls earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, as one of 146 Division I teams to be recognized.
The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
"A hearty congratulations to all the volleyball coaches whose teams won the AVCA Team Academic Award," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Teams do not succeed in the classroom by accident any more so than they do on the court. The same coach who taught them volleyball skills cared enough about their academic achievement to gather their grades, calculate their GPA, and submit a nomination on their behalf. In doing so, these coaches sent a clear message that classroom success is just as important as volleyball success. All involved should celebrate this award!"
The AVCA honor comes a few days after learning that Temple also won the American Athletic Conference Academic Excellence Award. The Owls took home that honor by compiling the highest GPA of all the teams in the conference.
Individually, the team had 13 members earn American Athletic Conference All-Academic Honors, recording a GPA of over 3.00.
Temple opens the 2015 season by hosting Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Temple Invitational. The Owls will welcome Oregon, Navy, and St. John's to McGonigle Hall for a two-day event, beginning August 28.
