Temple Volleyball Hosts Intrasquad Owl Opener

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team had a chance to fine tune at the halfway point of the preseason, hosting an intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday night at McGonigle Hall. The Owls split into two teams -- cherry and white, with each team winning one of the three-set matches. Â
In the first round, the cherry squad, made up of Sandra Sydlik, Dara Peric, Janine Simmons, Carla Guennewig, Tyler Davis, Mia Heirakuji, Malia Smith, and Geena Bevenour earned a 2-1 win. The team battled back from being down 21-19 in the first set, to earn a 25-22 victory. The white team, consisting of Hannah Vandegrift, Irem Asci, Caroline Grattan, Kirsten Overton, Halle McCullough, Izzy Rapacz, Alyssa Drachslin, and Kayla Yingling tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 win in the second set, breaking an 18-18 tie with a 7-1 run. In the deciding third set, the cherry squad jumped ahead 11-2, and then wrapped up the 15-6 victory.
Between rounds, the teams were juggled. The white team now featured Sydlik, Asci, Peric, Overton, Simmons, Rapacz, Drachslin, and Heirakuji, while the cherry team was made up of Vandegrift, Grattan, Guennewig, McCullough, Davis, Yingling, Smith, and Bevenour.Â
In the final round, the white team got matching 25-20 wins in the first two sets to earn the match victory. Both sets saw tight play before the white team surged down the stretch. With the match already decided, the teams played a third set with the cherry squad earning the set win this time, recording a 25-21 victory.
Temple opens the 2015 season on Friday, August 28, when the Owls host the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Temple Invitational. The tournament features Temple, Oregon, Navy, and St. John's, with the Owls opening play with a 6:00 p.m. match against Oregon on Friday night.
