Women's Soccer Opens Season With 3-0 Victory over FDU
8.21.15 | Women's Soccer
AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple women's soccer team started the 2015 season strong, with a 3-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday aftenoon.
The Owls were quick to put a goal on the scoreboard, when in the fourth minute senior Paula Jurewicz took a slide pass from red-shirt sophomore Kayla Cunningham straight into the net for the first goal of the game.
In the second half, senior Kelly Farrell drilled a shot into the top left corner of the net in the 58th minute, making it 2-0. Temple extended its lead in the 72nd minute, as sophomore Elana Falcone added an insurance goal to complete the scoring for the match.
The Knights' best chances to score came early and late in the game. In the third minute of the game, Rachel Hoekstra took a header that went wide off a corner kick, while in the 90th minute, Temple freshman keeper Jordan Nash saved back-to-back attempts, the first coming on a penalty kick.
After a strenuous preseason, the team was ready to be on the field and get the season started.
"I'm very pleased with this start. We've been hitting each other for the last two and a half weeks so now we had the chance to go out and play against a team that won 14 games last year," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "The girls just went crazy today, starting the game with enthusiasm and energy. Everything was fantastic."
"I'm ecstatic because everyone played so well and we played as a team, which is the most important part. We all worked together to get the win," said senior Shauni Kerkhoff.
Kerkhoff played for almost 85 minutes of the game and recorded two saves, before passing the goalkeeping duties to Nash. Nash's 90th-minute heroics preserved the shutout for the Owls.
"It's great that she was able to start her Temple career like that and I hope that she's able to continue to go on when I leave," said Kerkhoff.
The Owls will return to Ambler on Sunday, August 23 to face Delaware State in a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
