Women's Soccer Looks To Remain Undefeated Against Rider

8.31.15 | Women's Soccer

AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple women's soccer team looks to remain undefeated as they gear up to take on Rider on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

So far this season, the Owls have put up 12 goals, the second-most in program history (17 goals in three games in 1991) and lead the American Athletic Conference. Temple is also the only team in the conference to not have any goals against them.

The last two seasons for the Owls have started out on winning streaks. In 2013, the team set a record by winning the first four contests without giving up a goal. In 2014, the Owls broke their own streak by winning seven straight games.

Last Friday, Temple shut down Loyola (Md.), 4-0 on three goals within the first 15 minutes of play. Senior Kelly Farrell collected her third goal of the season in the fourth minute and sophomore Elana Falcone picked up her second off a corner kick in the sixth minute of the game.

Senior Erin Lafferty picked up her first multi-goal game of her career. After sending a ball into the top right corner of the net in the 13th minute off a free kick, Lafferty later picked up her second goal of the game in the 64th minute off a penalty kick.

ABOUT RIDER…
• Rider enters the week 1-1, after a double-overtime loss to Fairleigh Dickinson on August 27. In the meeting of the MAAC?and NEC?defending champs, FDU came out with a 2-1 win.
• Goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard recorded a career-high 15 saves in the game against FDU, bringing her season total to 22. The Glastonbury,?England, native's previous career-high was 11 saves, set back in 2014, where she finished with 122 saves and a .853 save percentage.
• Forward Kourtney Cunningham will step out onto the field and see a familiar face staring back at her: her sister, Kayla, who plays for Temple. Kourtney and Kayla were both standout soccer and field hockey players at Whitehall High School. In 2014, Kayla was named to the American Athletic Conference?All-Rookie team, while Kourtney garnered MAAC Rookie of the?Week honors for the week ending 8/24, after scoring two goals in Rider's 3-2 season opening win at Mount St. Mary's. Kayla said "it's exciting" to get the chance to play her younger sister in a collegiate game, but hopes to be the victorious one at the end of the day.
"I'm really competitive and she's really competitive so we always push each other being on the same team, but now being on opposite sides of the field is going to feel really different," said Kayla. "I haven't seen her in two months so it'll be good to see her, but I want to see her on the losing side at the end of the game."

SERIES HISTORY…
Rider leads the series, 3-1. Temple picked up its only victory in the 2014 season when they defeated the Broncs, 3-0.

UP NEXT…
The Owls will travel across the Schuylkill River to visit city rival Penn on September 4. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m. at Rhodes Field.
