Field Hockey and Lacrosse Teams Earn BIG EAST Academic Excellence Awards

NEW YORK - The Temple field hockey and lacrosse teams are among the 22 squads recognized with 2014-15 BIG EAST Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each sport.
Temple is an associate member of the BIG EAST only in field hockey and lacrosse, and earned the honor for both programs. The winners were chosen based on the 2014-15 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
The field hockey program set a new record for the 2015 spring semester, recording a team GPA of 3.57 to lead the Temple athletics department.
"To excel as a student is one thing," said head field hockey coach Marybeth Freeman. "To excel on the field is another. But to have the drive, commitment and dedication to excel at both is something special. Having our team earn this award makes us incredibly proud and honored. This group has a true understanding of how we want our program represented and they help define our team's character and dedication to success."
The lacrosse team earned The Owl Trophy at the 2015 Breakfast of Champions, given each year to the team with the highest GPA in the department. Lacrosse had a combined GPA of 3.51 at that time, and went on to record an impressive team GPA of 3.56 for the spring semester.
"To be recognized as the best in our conference is truly an amazing honor," said head lacrosse coach Bonnie Rosen. "Day in and day out our student-athletes have committed their time to the pursuit of excellence both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field. While education is about more than a grade point average, achieving such a high team GPA is truly an accomplishment and worthy of this wonderful recognition."
