Volleyball Downs Binghamton to Win Cherry & White Challenge

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team won the 2015 Hilton Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge with a 3-0 sweep over Binghamton on Saturday night. The Owls grabbed the match, 25-17, 25-10, and 25-11, to earn a perfect 3-0 record at the event. Temple moved to 7-2 with the win, while Binghamton, who was tournament runner-up, falls to 3-7.
Temple hit a combined .500 in the match, holding Binghamton to just a .063 clip. The Owls were paced by tournament MVP, sophomore Izzy Rapacz, who hit .409 at the event, recording 34 total kills. Joining Rapacz with All-Tournament honors were senior setter Sandra Sydlik and senior defensive specialist Kayla Yingling.
Against Binghamton, Temple sophomore Irem Asci hammered 13 kills with one error, hitting a season-best .667. Rapacz was equally as impressive in the match with 12 kills and only one error, hitting .611, while adding a pair of blocks. Junior Tyler Davis contributed eight kills, while junior Caroline Grattan had six kills on nine swings without an error. Sophomore Janine Simmons added five kills and also picked up a match-high five blocks.
Sydlik ran the offense, dishing out 37 assists and added four aces. Defensively, senior Alyssa Drachslin tallied 12 digs, sophomore Dara Peric picked up 11, and Yingling added five.
In set one, the teams were tied at 4-4, before Temple began to pull away. A long serving run from Yingling, combined with hot-hitting from Rapacz and Asci, allowed the Owls to take a 13-7 lead. Binghamton answered with back-to-back kills, sparking a run that saw the Bearcats knot the match at 15-15. Temple took advantage of a service error on the next point, and slowly pulled away. The Owls closed out the set with a 10-2 run, sealing a 25-17 victory.
Temple opened up a 5-0 lead in the second set and didn't relinquish the advantage. The Owls' offense was nearly unstoppable, hammering 14 kills on just 21 swings without an error to hit .667 in the frame. The Temple defense added five blocks and held the Bearcats to .077 on the attack.
In the third and final set, it was once again all Temple. The Owls started the match on a 6-0 run, and quickly built a 13-4 lead. Temple allowed the Bearcats to get no closer, extending the advantage to 21-9 and then cruising to the 25-11 victory.
Temple is back in action at the 2015 Philadelphia Big 5 Tournament. The defending champions at the event, the Owls open play on Friday at 4:00 p.m. against La Salle at the Palestra. TU then hosts the Saturday matches at McGonigle Hall.
