Women's Gymnastics Set for Two-Meet Weekend

PHILADELPHIA – Entering its third weekend of competition, Temple women's gymnastics is set for a two-meet weekend featuring three ECAC opponents and a team ranked in the top 10. The Owls will dual at William & Mary on Friday, Jan. 15 starting at 7:00 p.m., and will return to the floor just two days later at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational hosted by #7 George Washington. The Lindsey Ferris Invitational, set to kick off at 1:00 p.m., will also feature the North Carolina Tar Heels and ECAC rivals Penn and Cornell.
The Owls are coming off a 195.15-188.45 loss to Kent State. Despite the loss, both returners and newcomers logged impressive performances. Senior Reagan Oliveri continued to show her consistency on beam, leading the Owls on the event for the second week in a row with a 9.675.
Junior Briana Odom is another returner entering the weekend with a solid start to her 2016 season. She has led the floor lineup in both meets of the season, earning a career-high 9.725 at Central Michigan and a 9.7 against Kent State. Odom has also posted strong scores on bars and vault at both meets, hitting both events at both competitions and earning a 9.675 against Kent State.
Making their mark in their debut seasons, sophomore Sahara Gipson and freshmen India Anderson and Elizabeth McDuffie have landed high-scoring routines to kick off their Temple careers. Gipson and Anderson have both hit scores of 9.65 on vault. Gipson has also led the bar team and earned a personal-best 9.7 on her way to a 38.325 all-around score last weekend.
In her first collegiate competition, McDuffie earned a 9.65 on bars to rank third on the team.
Friday's Dual Meet…
The Tribe of William & Mary enters 2016 as the reigning ECAC Champions. In their first meet of the season, the Tribe earned a team total 189.05 and were led by junior all-around gymnast Briana Gironda. Gironda posted a 38.425 all-around score and led the Tribe on bars with a 9.625 and placed third overall on beam with a 9.65. Senior standout Brittany Stover won the vault title with a 9.8.
The meeting between the Owls and the Tribe will be the 44th overall. The Tribe leads the series 15-29. In 2015, the two teams only met at the conference championships where the Tribe earned a team score of 194.375 to top the conference and the Owls.
The Lindsey Ferris Invitational…
For Penn and Cornell, the Lindsey Ferris Invitational will be the first competition of the 2016 season. At the 2015 ECAC Championships, Penn ended in fourth and Cornell placed sixth.
The Tar Heels of North Carolina travel to George Washington following a 192.4-189.05 defeat of William & Mary. The team was led by sophomores Kaitlynn Hedelund and Morgan Lane who took the gold and silver in the all-around, respectively. The team's 2015 season ended with a fifth place finish at the EAGL championships where they scored a 194.8.
As the hosts of the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, the #7 George Washington Colonials look to continue their success from their season-opener. Taking the top spot at the Little Boston Invitational, the Colonials scored a 196.175 to top New Hampshire and Rutgers. The team also landed themselves a spot in the top 10 and currently sit in a tie for seventh with 2015 NCAA Super Six qualifiers Auburn and Utah.
Four Colonials are also ranked within the top 10 individually on their respective events, led by sophomore Jillian Winstanley who is tied for #1 in the nation on vault after logging a 9.925 last weekend.
This weekend's Lindsey Ferris Invitational will mark the Owls' fifth consecutive year in attendance and they have never taken home the team title at the meet. Last year, the Colonials edged out the Tar Heels by less than 0.5 to earn the team win for the third year in a row.
