Gymnastics Tops Season-Best to Place Third at Lindsey Ferris Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following a conference victory and first win of the season, Temple women's gymnastics set another season-high team score of 191.375 to place third out of five teams at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational. Nationally ranked George Washington topped the field with a 195.425, followed by ECAC opponent Cornell who logged a 194.025.
"I think the girls realized we had momentum coming off of Friday's win," said head coach Umme Salim-Beasley. "They were able to see that we are a competitive team and can stand up with teams in and out of our conference. They saw that even without a perfect day we can improve and post big scores".
The Owls were able to earn wins over Penn (190.625) and North Carolina (188.925). Junior Briana Odom led the Owls, competing all four events to earn a career-high all-around score of 38.875 to take fourth among nine all-around competitors.
Odom earned a career-high mark on floor with a 9.8 to lead the team to a 48.525 event total. Senior Danielle Vahala also topped her career-high score on the event with a 9.625. Sophomores Alexa Phillip and Sahara Gipson both earned season-high scores with a 9.775 for Phillip and a 9.725 for Gipson. The lineup was rounded out by India Anderson who posted a 9.6.
Bars was the second highest-scoring event for the Owls, with a total of 48.075 that was led again by Odom (9.675). Gipson and Elizabeth McDuffie added a pair of 9.65 scores and Reagan Oliveri posted a 9.6. Breahna Wiczkowski earned a 9.5 in her second bars appearance.
Gipson continued her vault success, earning a season-high 9.75 as the event's anchor. She was preceded by impressive performances from Odom, Anderson and Gina Tucker. Both Tucker and Odom earned scores of 9.675 and Anderson logged a 9.625. The Owls earned a 47.75 total for their efforts.
Beam totaled a 47.025, led by Odom's 9.725 in her second beam appearance of the season. McDuffie was placed in the lineup for the first time and earned a 9.6 for her routine. Wiczkowski continued her success as the event's lead off gymnast, earning her second score of 9.7 for the season.
"All in all I was pleased and the girls were pleased," said Salim-Beasley. "It was exciting to see that we keep improving meet after meet."
Temple women's gymnastics returns to competition on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the University of Pittsburgh where the Owls will face George Washington for the second week in a row, as well as the Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire. The quad meet is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
