Behind the Mask: Fencing's Kristen Kemnitzer and Auset Muhammad

PHILADELPHIA - Throughout the Temple fencing season, two Owls will be featured each week in a series called "Behind the Mask." The first installment helps fans get to know junior Kristen Kemnitzer and freshman Auset Muhammad, both of the foil squad.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Telekineis

How did you get started in fencing?
My mom wanted me to play a sport at the same time my sister was in gymnastics class.

Do you have siblings? Names, ages?
Caitlyn- 18 and a freshman at Ohio State, but she doesn't play a sport.
Jack- 12.

If you could be in any profession after college, what would it be?
I have an interest in working with a professional sport team, preferably abroad.

If you could change one thing about the world today, what would it be?
I would try to encourage tolerance and generosity. If everyone displayed those two qualities a little more it would make the world, or at least somebody's world, a better place.
If you could eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Cacio e Pepe – my favorite pasta dish I had while in Italy.

Favorite candy?
Milk Kinder Chocolate.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
Being recognized for my GPA on the team. I worked really hard and to be recognized at the end of the year banquet with my parents there made me feel really accomplished.Â

What TV shows are you hooked on?
Everything… If all else fails I could definitely be a doctor by the amounts of Grey's Anatomy I've seen.

If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
A dolphin, I love the ocean and dolphins are happy and social animals.

Favorite exercise in the weight room?
Squats. They're hard but when there's improvement in numbers or a weight that was hard one week and is easier the next, it's a really rewarding feeling.Â

What's one word to describe yourself?
Positive.

What is something your mom or dad taught you?
My mom and dad passed along their hard work ethic and I try to put it towards all my endeavors including academics, my fencing and the team.
Auset Muhammad
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Enhanced physical skills and ESP.

How did you get started in fencing?
My dad showed me a picture taken at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. It was a picture of the men's foil gold medal bout, one of the fencers was in the air getting the touch and I fell in love immediately.

Do you have siblings? Names, ages?
My little brother Thelonius is 14 years old.

If you could be in any profession after college, what would it be?
Food chemist or soil scientist.

If you could change one thing about the world today, what would it be?
I would end starvation around the world.

Pad Thai.

Belgium chocolate.

Being accepted to Temple University.
