Women's Basketball Opens 2016-17 Season Friday at Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team tips-off the 2016-17 season on Friday on the road at Saint Joseph's. The Owls head Hagan Arena for a Philadelphia Big 5 clash with the Hawks at 7:00 p.m.

Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series with Temple, 43-34, including taking four in a row from the Owls. Prior to the four-game losing streak for Temple against. Saint Joseph's, the Owls had won nine-straight in the match-up.
SCOUTING TEMPLE
The Owls return four double-digit scorers from last year's 23-12 team that advanced to the WNIT Quarterfinals. Leading the way is junior Alliya Butts, a returning first team All-American Athletic Conference and All-Big 5 player, as well as the only unanimous first team pre-season All-Conference selection in The American. Butts averaged 15.1 points per game last season, while leading the Owls in steals and threes. She is joined by senior Feyonda Fitzgerald, who was Temple's top play-maker last season (5.31 assists/game), while averaging 13.6 points per contest.
Juniors Tanaya Atkinson (13.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and Donnaizha Fountain (10.4 ppg, 6.7 rpg) also return for the Owls as top guards from a year ago. Temple will also rely on seniors Safiya Martin (1.1 ppg, 1.9 rpg) and Ruth Sherrill (1.1 ppg, 1.6 rpg) to provide veteran experience this season.
SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S
Saint Joseph's went 14-15 overall last season, finishing 8-8 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks are picked to finish eighth in the conference.
SJU returns two starters from last year's squad, including junior Chelsea Woods, a pre-season A-10 third-team selection. Woods is the Hawks' leading returning scorer, contributing 9.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last year, while senior Amanda Fioravanti made 13 starts last season, averaging 7.3 point and 5.3 boards per game. Sophomore Alyssa Monaghan averaged 5.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game last season, while junior Adashia Franklyn chipped in with 4.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game a year ago.

Visiting Saint Joseph's out-scored Temple 24-13 in the fourth quarter to hand the Owls a 70-67 loss. The defeat was the third-straight for the Owls who moved to 2-3 on the season, while the Hawks snapped a three-game skid to improve to 1-3 overall.
Temple led by as many as 14 points in the game, and were up by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter. However, a 14-3 run from Saint Joseph's was the turning point as the Hawks won their fourth-straight over Temple.
Temple had three players in double-figures led by junior Feyonda Fitzgerald who finished with 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Sophomores Tanaya Atkinson (12 points) and Alliya Butts (10 points) also aided the Temple offense, which out-shot Saint Joseph's 46.4% to 41.4%.
