Fencing Goes a Perfect 4-0 at Sacred Heart Tradition Tournament; Beats Harvard 15-12
12.4.16 | Women's Fencing
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - It was an impressive outing for Temple fencing at the Sacred Heart Tradition Tournament on Sunday, as the Owls (8-2) went a perfect 4-0. Temple defeated host SHU, Vassar and NYU along with earning a huge win over nationally ranked Harvard after losing to the Crimson at SHU in each of the last three seasons.
Temple held three of its opponents to five points or fewer, while defeating Harvard by a score of 15-12. The Owls started the day with a 24-3 win over NYU before the victory against the Crimson, and closed out the afternoon with a 22-5 win against Sacred Heart and a 25-2 win over Vassar.
"Every bout counted against Harvard," said Temple head coach Dr. Nikki Franke. "It was tough and close all the way through. The girls really showed a lot of mental toughness and came from behind in a couple bouts. They worked together really well and supported each other. After having some narrow losses to top teams it was nice to win a close one. It was just a really good team effort."
All three squads went 4-0 for the day, with all three winning 5-4 against Harvard. Individually, freshman Malia Hee of the sabre squad turned in a perfect performance for the Owls with a 9-0 record.
Foil squad freshman Alexa Prasher finished 9-1 for the day, while fellow foilist and freshman Kennedy Lovelace went 7-1.
For the epee squad, junior Safa Ibrahim and sophomore Ally Micek both went 7-1.
Sophomore Jessica Rockford was strong for the sabre squad along with Hee, finishing 6-1 for the day, while freshman Kerry Plunkett went 10-2.
"Today was a good way to close out the semester as we prepare to wind down," said Franke. "We really have seen the improvement in the things we've been trying to work with them on. We just have to continue to move forward and continue to get better."
Temple will take a break from team competition until January, getting back to action on Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Penn State Invitational.
