Gymnastics Travels to Chicago for IGI Chicago Style Meet

PHILADELPHIA – As the 2016 season continues, Temple women's gymnastics travels to Chicago, Ill., for the IGI Chicago Style Invitational on Friday, Feb. 12. This quad meet will feature Northern Illinois, Alaska and Central Michigan and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Last weekend the Owls hosted four teams for the Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational where they placed second with their second-highest team score of the season (191.175). ECAC opponent William & Mary came out on top with a score of 191.375.

The Owls' bar team dominated the competition, posting a season-high 48.85 that ranked 17th in the nation across all meets last week. Senior Reagan Oliveri logged a career-high 9.85 to share the event title, with junior Briana Odom also earning a career high with a 9.8. Sophomore Sahara Gipson ranked third for the Owls with a season-high 9.75, followed by sophomore Alexa Phillip and freshman Breahna Wiczkowski who both posted a score of 9.725.

 Floor exercise was another successful event for the Owls. The lineup totaled a 48.175, the team's second highest score of the season, and was led by Odom who posted a career-high matching 9.8. Freshman India Anderson continued her consistency on the event, adding a 9.7. Anderson was followed closely by Gipson and Phillip who posted scores of 9.65 and 9.625, respectively.

Aside from Oliveri's career-high bar performance, she grabbed a second event title on beam with a 9.7 and competed in the all-around for the first time in 2016. She logged a 9.375 on floor and a 9.425 on vault to total a 38.35. For her efforts, Oliveri was named the ECAC Coaches' Choice Gymnast of the Week.

Friday's competition will be the second meeting between the Owls and the Chippewas of Central Michigan. The teams last saw each other in their season-openers on Jan. 3. The Chippewas bested the Owls 193.425-188.9. Since the last meeting, Central Michigan has seen team score improvement in every competition, earning their season-best team score of 195.4 at Eastern Michigan on Feb. 5. Kasey Janowicz has been a key competitor for the Chippewas, participating in the all-around in every meet of the season and earning a top score of 39.275 last weekend.

The Northern Illinois Huskies have earned a season-high team score of 194.675 and are coming off a loss at Eastern Michigan where they logged a 193.95. Bar specialist Jamyra Carter enters the meet after earning first place on her event in three consecutive meets. Carter now stands 10th in the MAC conference on the event. Fellow bar specialist Lauren Africano has yet to score below a 9.75 on the event and ranks third in the conference.

Rounding out the oppenents for the meet are the Alaska Seawolves who travel to Chicago for their third meet of the 2016 season. The Seawolves have posted a season-high team score of 191.5 in their season-opener against Bowling Green. Senior M'rcy Matsunami earned the program's fifth highest all-around score last weekend with a 38.975. Classmate Mikaela Jones earned two event titles on vault and beam with scores of 9.825 and 9.85, respectively.

The Owls last met the Seawolves in 2014 in a two-meet weekend at Alaska. The Seawolves topped the Owls in both meets that weekend.
