STORRS, Conn. – In the first American Athletic Conference match of the season, the Temple men's tennis team beat out East Carolina, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

"It was a great conference win against a tough opponent. The guys fought hard and played extremely well in doubles and continued that into singles," said head coach Steve Mauro. "We're happy that the guys played with a lot of heart and we're hoping the guys can continue that momentum going against UConn tomorrow."

The Owls started off strong against the Pirates, as Artem Kapshuk and Nicolas Paulus defeated Fredric Lehfeldt and Vlad Anghel, 6-3 at the second flight. The freshmen duo of Florian Mayer and Uladzimir Dorash clinched the doubles point for Temple, taking down Kasey Countee and Will Bissett, 6-4 at the third flight.

In singles, East Carolina would tie things up at one as Bissett defeated Filip Stipcic, 6-3, 6-2 at the sixth flight. Kapshuk put the Owls back in the lead after taking down Anghel, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at the second flight, but the Pirates' Tendai Tapfuma evened out the score again after defeating Santiago Canete at the first flight, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

East Carolina would take a 3-2 lead after Countee handed Mayer his first loss of the season, defeating him 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the fourth flight. Paulus would help level the playing field after taking down Lehfeldt, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

The final point was awarded to Owls after Dorash defeated Ronny Gerogi at the fifth flight, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Temple (5-1, 1-0 The American) will stay in Storrs to face UConn on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
