Overheard at the NFL Combine
2.24.16 | Football
Various topics are covered at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis with many players, coaches, and general managers scheduled for press conferences and over 1,000 media members covering the workouts.
Â
Here are a few Temple related notes that have come out of Indy that we will update throughout the week….
Â
Ioannidis's 32 reps in the bench was the second best total among defensive linemen. In fact, it was exceeded by just three players at the 2016 combine - OG Christian Westerman, Arizona State (34), DT Chris Mayes, Georgia (33), OG Connor McGovern, Missouri (33).Temple's Kyle Friend, who was not invited to the NFL Combine, has pressed 225-lbs. 47 times which would be among the best ever at the combine.
NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock about Matt Ioannidis:
"This is a good football player…played extremely well at the senior bowl…When you want to look at the resurgence on Broad Street in North Philadelphia and the Temple Owls it starts with Matt Ioannidis. What a good football player he is . They had three defensive players from Temple at the senior bowl and all three played well. We are going to see Matakevich the linebacker, and tomorrow we will see Tavon Young."
"I had Temple football player tell me a couple months ago that Ioannidis was going to show out here at the combine cause he's highly athletic and so far he has."
Â
NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock about Tyler Matakevich:
This kid is one of those examples of how do you figure measurables versus intangibles. Tyler Matakevich had 493 tackles in his career at Temple. 493. Seven interceptions, four forced fumbles. He's not gonna test well but all he does is make plays. I'm intrigued to see where he gets drafted. He was coached at Milford Academy by a guy named Bill Chaplick who is a heck of a high school coach; knows what he's doing. Turned out guys like LeSean McCoy and a bunch of NFL players. This guy's a baller; he's a really good football player and I hope he tests well because he can play…When you put a helmet on and instincts take over and the ability to get over and under blocks it's a completely different animal. He's one of those guys you have to give a shot to cause he's a good football player."
Â
NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock about Tavon Young:
Temple tough. With Ioannidis, Young and Matakevich – they represented this year.
Tyler Matakevich to the gathered media:
"I may not be the biggest, strongest, or fastest, but I'll beat you in the film room. I can literally see the formation and nail it down to a few plays, and once I see a key, I'm beating the ball to where it's going to b. There's nothing I can do about my size; it's the film, you know? I think I've put enough film (up) in the last four years for them to see that my size doesn't matter and I can play with whoever it is… my film shows that I have been one of the most productive players in this class."
"Most teams are talking about me in the middle, MIKE linebacker. Wherever they put me, I'll be happy. Definitely when I'm in the box, I feel like that's when I'm in my element. I see more than your average person can see when they're in the box. I definitely think that's where they want to put me."
Current Arizona Cardinals' and former Temple head coach Bruce Arians on New York Jets' head coaach and former Temple Owl Todd Bowles:
"Miami screwed up a long time ago. He should have been head coach there when he was interim coach…Ever since Temple, whatever that was, 30-some years ago, watching him grow as a coach, it was fun. It really was. And then to be able to have him on the staff and do what he did, all you need is opportunity. Brilliant young man, and he's a great teacher. It's not what you know, it's can you teach it? And he can teach it."
