Women's Gymnastics Set to Host Eighth Annual Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational

2.5.16 | Women's Gymnastics

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's gymnastics is set to welcome four teams in the eighth annual Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational. On Saturday, Feb. 6, the gymnastics teams from Ursinus, Southern Connecticut State, West Chester, and ECAC rival William & Mary will take the floor for the Owls' first home meet of 2016. The Owls and their opponents are set to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will honor late coach Ken Anderson prior to the beginning of competition.

Saturday's meet will be the second consecutive meeting between the Owls, the Bears of Ursinus and the Golden Rams of West Chester. Last weekend, the Rams hosted a quad meet where they topped all three visiting teams with a team total of 190.875. The Owls landed in second place with a score of 189.575, followed by Ursinus and Centenary.

Junior Briana Odom brought home two event titles and placed second in the all-around behind West Chester's Majesta Valentine. Odom logged three scores of 9.65 on vault, bars and beam, as well as a 9.75 on floor, on her way to a 38.7 all-around score that earned her a second ECAC gymnast of the week title. Odom now ranks first in the ECAC in the all-around and 12th in the North East region with an average score of 38.558.

Senior Reagan Oliveri added a third event at the meet and hit her first vault since 2014 for a 9.275. Oliveri was also able to add some consistency on bars and beam, posting a 9.475 and 9.6 respectively.

Sophomore Sahara Gipson also looks to continue her 2016 success following a stuck vault at last weekends's quad meet. Gipson shared the vault title with Odom after scoring a 9.65. Through five meets, she holds a 9.665 vault average that ranks fifth in the conference.

Classmate Alexa Phillip is also ranked within the top 10 in the conference on an individual event. Her floor marks have earned her a 9.65 average that sits 10th among all floor competitors in the ECAC.

The Rams will enter the meet following a winning two-meet weekend. Two days after their quad meet, West Chester travelled to Philadelphia for a tri-meet hosted by Penn. The Rams logged the same exact team total from two days prior of 190.875 to win the meet. Junior Majesta Valentine has been the team's leader in 2016, earning a seasons-best 38.925 at Sunday's competition that broke the school's all-around record.

The Bears of Ursinus College have logged a season-high team score of 187.40 entering their fourth meet of the season this weekend. At the West Chester quad meet, the Bears posted a 186.925 to place third behind the Owls and the Rams. Senior Kristina Steffenhagen, who competes on three events, has been a strong performer in her final season. Steffenhagen earned the NCGA East Region Specialist of the Week following the team's competition at Brockport.

William & Mary will travel to Philadelphia following a long trip to San Jose State where the Tribe posted a 187.65 to place fourth. Briana Gironda, Olivia O'Connor, and Brittany Stover have been the Tribe's top all-around performers, with Stover logging the team's top score last weekend with a 37.45. Sophomore Eileen Malecki posted the top score for any event for the Tribe with a 9.8 on bars that tied for first place.

Southern Connecticut State is the final squad to take the floor at the Ken Anderson Invitational. The Owls have posted a season-high team score of 189.025 set at their last meet at Springfield College. Alexandra Avendano will be coming off her best of the season, where she posted a 9.75 on floor, a 9.525 on beam, and a 9.5 on vault. Nicole Pruchnik will also be looking to take her momentum from last weekend into Saturday's meet. Pruchnik logged a 9.825 on floor to take home the event title at last weekend's quad meet.
