2.7.16 | Men's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches on Saturday as they took down visiting Wagner College, 7-0.
"It was a good win today against Wagner. The guys came out strong in doubles and continued in singles. I was very impressed with our three freshmen – Florian Mayer, Uladzimir Dorash and Artem Kapshuk, who all had strong singles performances," said head coach Steve Mauro. "Between the three freshman and the returning players, the team is off to a great start and hopefully we'll keep the momentum going into our East Carolina and UConn matches this weekend."
The match started off with a battle for the doubles point. The Owls started off with a 6-3 win at the third flight from Dorash and Mayer over Ilya Kneppelhout and Charlton Boyd. The Seahawks responded as Eric Poland and Dale Sandy defeated Hicham Belkssir and Vineet Naran, 6-3 at the second flight. Temple clinched the point with a 6-2 victory at the first flight from Santiago Canete and Kapshuk.
In singles, the Owls continued their strong performance by sweeping their sets. Mayer remained undefeated on the season as he defeated Kneppelhout, 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth flight. Kapshuk also picked a win at the second flight after taking down Sandy, 6-3, 6-1. Canete was then able to seal the victory for the Owls after a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lu at the first flight. Temple rounded out the match with wins from Dorash at the fifth flight, Filip Stipcic at the sixth flight, and Nicolas Paulus at the third flight.
The Owls will travel to Storrs, Conn. this weekend to face their two American Athletic Conference foes, as they take on the Pirates on February 13 and the Huskies on February 14.
