PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's rowing team had an outstanding day of racing, competing at the 34th annual Murphy Cup Regatta. Temple hosted the event, held on the Schuylkill River.
"I thought it was a great day," said head coach Rebecca Smith Grzybowski. "I thought the vibe and energy from the team was great. It's our one big home event, and to do it on the Schuylkill, in front of Philadelphia fans, and what will become new boathouse is really fun."
Temple nabbed three silver medals on the day, taking second in the second varsity eight, novice eight, and novice four races. Overall, Temple boats finished no lower than fourth in any race contested on the day.
"I was pleased top to bottom. The recruited freshman have really stepped up in all categories," added Grzybowski. "This is what the vision was and what we've been telling people we're building. So to see the results come out is satisfying. It justifies the hard work we've been putting in, and energizes us moving forward."
In the second varsity eight event, Temple opened the day by taking its heat by over eight seconds. The Owls clocked in at 6:52.72, ahead of Rutgers, Bates, Buffalo, and Penn State. In the afternoon's final, Temple notched a time of 6:57.25, just off the pace of Navy, and ahead of St. Joseph's, Fordham, George Washington, and Drexel.
Temple's novice eight had a great day of racing, beginning with a heat win in a time of 7:14.85. In the final, it was a photo finish, as Temple was just .34 seconds behind Delaware. Temple finished in 7:17.97, ahead of Rutgers, St. Joseph's, Colgate, and Villanova.
The Owls' novice four boat also grabbed a silver medal, opening the day with a win in their heat. In the final, Temple was behind only George Washington, clocking in at 8:01.90, ahead of Buffalo, St. Joseph's, Loyola, and Philly U.
Both the varsity eight and varsity four finished in fourth place, just outside of the medals. The varsity eight took second in their opening heat, clocking in at 6:44.80. Finals racing featured a tight pack, as just over seven seconds was the difference between first and fifth place. The Owls nabbed a time of 6:51.01, under a second out of third place, while topping boats from Navy and Drexel.
In varsity four racing, Temple raced a pair of boats in the opening heats. The "A" boat won their heat in 7:44.30 to advance to the finals, while the "B" boat clocked in at 7:58.59 to take third in the heat. In the finals, the "A" boat took fourth overall, recording a time of 7:59.25, ahead of Colgate and St. Joseph's.
Temple is back in action on the Schuylkill next weekend, racing Bucknell, Williams, and Duquesne on Saturday.
