Butts, Fitzgerald Named to All-American Athletic Conference Teams

PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomore Alliya Butts and junior Feyonda Fitzgerald represented the Temple women's basketball team with regular-season honors, as announced by the American Athletic Conference on Thursday. Butts was named to the all-conference first team, while Fitzgerald picked up a second team selection.
Butts becomes the first Temple women's basketball player in program history to earn first-team honors in the American Athletic Conference. The last time any Temple player garnered a first-team selection in any conference was Shey Peddy who got a first-team All-Atlantic 10 nod in 2012. Butts leads the Owls in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game, which also ranks fifth in the conference. She's racked up 75 total steals this year, averaging 2.8 per game, ranking her second in the conference and in the top-25 in the nation. The guard is a repeat member of the All-Conference team, after earning third-team honors as a freshman last season.
Fitzgerald was named to the All-Conference second team for the second time in her career. She's second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.2 points per game, and leads the Owls with 157 total assists, a number that is already fourth on Temple's all-time single season list. Fitzgerald ranks in the top-10 in the conference in scoring, assists, steals, and free throw percentage, and her assist total places her 27th amongst all players in NCAA Division I. Fitzgerald has notched two double-doubles this season, both coming in points and assists, and has twice led the Owls in points, rebounds, and assists in a game this year.
Temple will open play in the 2016 American Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. The Owls will face the winner of #11 Houston and #6 Memphis in a Quarterfinal game at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
