COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. –  Temple women's basketball head coach Tonya Cardoza has been named one of two court coaches for the 2016 USA Basketball Women's U18 National Team Trials. The coaching selections were made by the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee. Trials for the 2016 USA team are expected to feature approximately 30 athletes and will take place from May 28-30 at the United State Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Cardoza will be joined by Kirsten Moore of Westmont College.

"Tonya and Kirsten are confident young coaches that have the ability to teach and motivate young people who want to have success," said Jim Foster (Tennessee-Chattanooga), chair of the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee. "They continue to grow in their game, and they will be a valuable asset to our trials."

Participants will compete for one of 12 roster spots on the USA U18 National Team, which will play in the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women from July 13-17 in Valdivia, Chile. Cardoza and Moore will assist the U18 coaching staff comprised of head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio (Pittsburgh) as well as assistant coaches Kamie Ethridge (Northern Colorado) and Charlotte Smith (Elon).

"I'm thrilled to have the honor of working with USA Basketball. I look forward to the experience of working with so many great players and coaches," Cardoza said. "It's always a privilege to represent your country in any facet and I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity."

After eight seasons (2008-09-present) as the head coach of the Temple Owls, Cardoza has compiled a 164-101 (.618 winning percentage) record. The Owls finished the 2015-16 season with a 23-12 record, including 13-5 in the American Athletic Conference and reaching the WNIT semifinals. Cardoza has a 57-45 record in three years since Temple switched from the Atlantic 10 to The American.

The University of Virginia alumna was awarded the Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year in three consecutive seasons (2009, 2010 and 2011). Cardoza also served as an assistant at the University of Connecticut from 1993-94 - 2007-08. During her time at Connecticut, the Huskies went 465-41 (.919), with seven Final Four appearances and two unbeaten, national championship teams.

In addition to Foster, the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee includes NCAA appointees Melanie Balcomb, Lindsay Gotlieb (California) and Joi Williams, as well as athlete representative Kara Lawson Barling, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist.
