Fencing Alum Fatima Largaespada Named Head Coach at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Recently graduated fencer Fatima Largaespada ('16) has been tabbed by Wagner College to be the head coach for the Seahawks' newly-instituted women's fencing program. Wagner will compete for the first time in 2016-17.

"I'm thrilled to add Fatima to the Wagner athletic family," said Wagner's Director of Athletics Walt Hameline. "She enjoyed a stellar career while competing for a Temple University program that was ranked in the top 10 nationally in each of her four years. I am confident that she will attract top student-athletes to Wagner and build a successful program."
 
In addition to helping the Owls achieve nationally recognized team success, Largaespada excelled individually as she placed in the NCAA Top 20 in 2013, 2014 and 2015 while finishing in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Top 10 in both 2013 and 2015.
 
As a senior in 2015-16, she took home first-place honors at the Temple Open while finishing third at the Penn State Garret Open. In addition, she ranked in the Top 16 at the 2016 North American Cup while earning a fourth-place finish at the 2016 NIWFA Championships.
 
Also fluent in Spanish and conversational in Italian, Largaespada earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree in strategic communicarion from Temple in 2016 while earning Dean's List honors with a major in public relations and a minor in business.
 
Largaespada also possesses experience at the club level, where she served as Director of Marketing with the San Antonioon Phoenix Fencers' Club during the summer of 2015. Her responsibilities in this role included reaching out to high schools in the San Antonio área to schedule summer camps, exploratory meetings and demonstrations.
 
"I am thankful and honored to be offered the opportunity to lead the Wagner women's fencing program," said Largaespada. "I believe my past experiences as a student-athlete and assistant coach will allow me to create a program that will help student athletes succeed in the classroom and in athletics."
