PHILADELPHIA - Temple fencing's third dual meet of the 2016-17 season takes the Owls to the Penn State Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 15. Temple (8-2) will face the host Nittany Lions (4-1), North Carolina (8-3), Yale (8-3), Haverford (6-6), Duke (0-0) and defending national champion Columbia (8-1).
After two dual meets in the fall, Temple begins a stretch of five more with the new semester. Those five will culminate in the Owls' own Temple Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 26.
"We are looking forward to resuming the dual meet schedule as the new semester begins," said head coach Dr. Nikki Franke. "We will be fencing every school that had a women's team at last year's NCAAs, many of them twice, which will be very challenging. Our team has worked hard to prepare themselves for the remainder of the season and they are determined to reach their goal of finishing the year as the highest ranked team in Temple fencing history."
At the Elite Invitational at Penn on Nov. 5, the Owls went 4-2 with their losses coming by just one point each to Columbia and to last year's second-place women's team in the nation, Notre Dame. They'll get another chance against the Lions this weekend.
On Dec. 4 at Sacred Heart, the Owls went a perfect 4-0 with wins against nationally ranked Harvard (sixth in the nation among women's teams last year), NYU, Sacred Heart and Vassar.
So far for Temple this season, the freshman class has been impressive in a strong slate of meets for the Owls. Freshman sabreist Malia Hee turned in a perfect 9-0 performance at the Sacred Heart meet and went 13-2 at the Elite Invitational. Hee was also a gold medalist at the Penn State Garret Open.
More recently, freshman Kerry Plunkett tied for third among 143 competitors in junior women's sabre at the January NAC in Columbus.
Temple will be closer to home for its next meet, the Philadelphia Invitational at Penn, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 21.
