Eighth-Ranked Fencing Finishes 2-3 at Philadelphia Invitational

1.21.17 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA (Penn) - The day did not go quite how the eighth-ranked Temple fencing team had hoped, as the Owls (14-7) finished 2-3 overall at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by Penn. Temple rebounded with two wins after a loss to start the day, but was edged by one point in its fourth match and lost to the host Quakers to close out the meet.

"We were just inconsistent today," said head coach Dr. Nikki Franke. "When one squad would be up, another would be struggling. We couldn't get everyone on the same page in the same match, and we lost so many bouts by one touch which just makes all the difference in the world. So those were our struggles today, and we will learn and improve in those areas. We have such a young squad and we still have a lot of work to do. It was a tough day, and we have to get better."

No. 9 Northwestern won in all three weapons to beat Temple 16-11 in the Owls' first match. Temple turned around and won an exciting match-up against Duke, 14-13, before also taking down Sacred Heart, 21-6.

The foil squad beat Cornell 5-4, but epee and sabre both suffered one-point losses as the Owls were bested by the Big Red, 14-13. In the final match of the day, Temple's sabre squad earned a 5-4 win over No. 6 Penn but the Owls ultimately lost, 19-8.

Three freshmen turned in the top performances of the meet for Temple, including two from the sabre squad. Kerry Plunkett and Malia Hee helped lead sabre to a 3-2 record by finishing at 9-3 and 7-3, respectively. For the foil squad, freshman Kennedy Lovelace finished with an impressive record of 10-5.

After taking next weekend off from competition, the Owls will return to action at the Northwestern Duals on Feb. 4-5.
