No. 7 Fencing Goes 5-0 at FDU; Sets Program Record With 30 Wins

2.11.17 | Women's Fencing

TEANECK, N.J. - Going a perfect 5-0 at the FDU Invitational, the seventh-ranked Temple fencing team has set a program record for wins in a season with 30. The Owls are now 30-8 overall, breaking the previous record, set in 2013-14, by two wins.

"It's definitely nice to set a school record," said head coach Dr. Nikki Franke. "The girls did a really good job today. There were a lot of close bouts and the matches were not as one-sided as the scores might make them seem. We came from behind in several key bouts which showed the determination and fortitude of the girls. That's what I was most impressed with. They never gave up and it ended up being an excellent day."

Temple dominated all day long, starting with a 19-8 win against host FDU with the sabre squad going a perfect 9-0. In round two, the Owls beat Stevens by a score of 22-5 with the foil squad winning 9-0 and the sabre squad once again impressive at 8-1.

Both foil and sabre won 8-1 as Temple beat Johns Hopkins 21-6 in round three. The fourth match was the Owls' closest of the day, but they prevailed 16-11 against Brandeis led by sabre's 7-2 victory. To cap the perfect day, the Owls beat NJIT 21-6 behind a perfect 9-0 performance from the sabre squad. For the meet, both epee and sabre were 5-0 overall.

Sophomore Auset Muhammad and freshman Kennedy Lovalace both went 12-3 for the foil squad, recording the most wins of anyone for the meet.

Sophomore Jessica Rockford led an impressive sabre squad at 10-1 overall, while senior Victoria Suber and sophomore Blessing Olaode both finished at 9-1. Freshman Kerry Plunkett tallied a record of 8-1, and freshman Malia Hee was 5-0 to round out a great day for sabre as the squad went 41-4 overall.

Junior Safa Ibrahim went 6-2 to lead epee, while sophomore Quinn Duwelius was 6-3.

The Owls will be represented by a few fencers at next weekend's Junior Olympics before returning to action as a team in their own Temple Invitational on Feb. 26.
