Jones Earns Second Place in Pentathlon at Day One of American Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Temple women's track and field kicked off the weekend at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex with a second-place show from sophomore Crystal Jones in the pentathlon.
Day one of competition began with the women's pentathlon at 9:00 a.m. featuring Jones. The sophomore logged a personal best of 3528 points to secure the no. 2 spot on the podium. Jones won her heat in the first event of the pentathlon, the 60 meter hurdles, with a time of 9.04. She then reaped 842 of her points in the high jump, topping her opponents with a mark of 1.69m. In the shot put, her best throw was an 8.61. A long jump of 5.18m earned her 609 points. In the fifth and final pentathlon event, Jones finished the 800 meter race with a personal best time of 2:26.58. At the podium, she stood along with pentathlon champion Naomi Urbano of Cincinnati and third-place winner Aminah Ghaffar of East Carolina. Jones' second-place finish scored significant points for the Owls.
"I started off strong in the 60 meter hurdles and the high jump today, which made all the difference," said Jones. "As far as tomorrow goes, I'm looking to do my best in the open high jump. Looking ahead to the outdoor season, I am focusing on my endurance, speed, and just being able to keep progressing in the high jump so that I can compete at nationals."
Freshman Millie Howard and junior Katie Pinson represented the Owls' distance squad in the mile run. With times of 5:00.16 and 5:02.85, respectively, the two advanced to the finals which will take place on Saturday at 11:15 a.m.
In the 5K run, sophomore Katie Leisher finished in 17:06.09, taking 11th place overall. Although her first time running the race, she beat the program record in the event, surpassing Jenna Dubrow's 2015 time of 17:18.85.
Senior Bionca St. Fleur made the long jump finals, finishing in seventh place with a mark of 5.74m.
The Owls will kick off day two of the American Indoor Championships on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. when Jones competes in for the title of women's high jump champion.
