Lacrosse Beats Bucknell 11-7 for Fifth Straight Win
3.12.17 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - Seven different players scored for Temple lacrosse as the Owls (7-1) won their fifth straight game, 11-7 against Bucknell to close out the non-conference season. Temple never trailed against the Bison (5-2), getting a team-high six points from senior Brenda McDermott who added four assists to a pair of goals.
Also scoring two goals apiece for the Owls were senior Anna Frederick, junior Nicole Barretta and sophomore Amber Lambeth. Seniors Morgan Glassford and Carly Demato along with junior Kira Gensler all added one goal each.
"This was a great way to get a win against a very, very good Bucknell team," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "They're having a great season and we knew they'd test us both offensively and defensively, and it was the battle I expected. The cold weather was tough for both teams a little bit today and I'm very happy to come out with a win."
The battle was largely a defensive one and sloppy at times, with a total of 42 turnovers between the two teams. Temple caused 10 of Bucknell's 23 turnovers, led by Lambeth with three caused turnovers and senior Rachel Barile with two. Leading the Owls in ground balls was freshman Kara Nakrasius with four, while Glassford and junior Nicole Latgis came up with three apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Maryn Lowell improved to 5-0 on the year, playing the complete game in the cage and making five saves.
Temple's defense was even more key with the difference in draw controls, as Bucknell came up with 15 of them to the Owls' five. The Bison came within two goals on three occasions in the second half, but Temple kept finding ways to limit Bucknell's chances.
"They found some nice scoring opportunities that they created and we had to kind of shut it down by closing the feeding lanes a little bit better," said Rosen. "I was happy with our team for limiting the fouls, I thought we did a decent job with our defensive body positioning and closing space without fouling which was really important. Also getting a few caused turnovers at the end allowed us to finish the game off. This was a team that could have come back right to the end, and I'm really happy we were able to hold on."
The Owls were dominant early on in the contest, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Glassford and McDermott each scored in that stretch while also each assisting on two other goals. Temple still led 6-3 at halftime thanks to a late first-period goal by Barretta on a Gensler assist.
With 14:25 remaining, the Owls had some cushion with a 9-5 lead, but Bucknell made one more push. The Bison scored twice in a two-minute span to make it 9-7 with 9:08 left, but Temple held them scoreless the rest of the way. Frederick made it 10-7 with 7:51 to go, and Gensler scored with eight seconds left for the final tally of 11-7.
Temple begins BIG EAST play in its next game, traveling to No. 16 Denver for a 11 a.m. contest on Saturday, March 18.
