Lacrosse Begins BIG EAST Play at No. 14 Denver on Sunday

3.16.17 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - The BIG EAST Conference season will begin a long way from home for Temple lacrosse, as the Owls head west to new league member No. 14 Denver for a 1 p.m. (Eastern) game on Sunday, March 19. The Pioneers (6-1) were picked to finish just ahead of the Owls (7-1) in the preseason coaches poll, taking the fourth spot while Temple was picked fifth.

Temple finished its non-conference season at 7-1, the best record in the BIG EAST. The Owls have won five straight, most recently beating Bucknell 11-7 at home on March 12.

Senior attacker Brenda McDermott, named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and named BIG EAST Attacker of the Week on Feb. 14, leads the league in total assists with 19 which ranks seventh in NCAA Division I. Two-time BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week already this season, senior Morgan Glassford, has a team-best 38 draw controls and ranks fourth in the league with 4.75 draws per game. Glassford has recorded 139 career draw controls to rank third all-time at Temple, needing just three more to tie for second and 17 more to tie for first.

Leading Temple in goals so far this season is sophomore Amber Lambeth with 16 after going scoreless in her freshman year. Lambeth had two four-goal efforts in the opening two games, both wins for the Owls. Freshman goalkeeper Maryn Lowell has played four complete games in a row and made a career-high 11 saves in helping the Owls defeat Lafayette, 18-12 on Feb. 25. Lowell is 5-0 in the cage so far this season.

Ranked 14th in the nation in the IWLCA Division I Coaches Poll, Denver is 6-1 overall with its only loss coming to No. 13 Colorado on the road. The Pioneers have also beaten a pair of ranked teams, topping No. 12 Stanford 10-7 and No. 18 Louisville 11-10 in three overtimes. Most recently, Denver cruised past Vermont, 14-4 on March 12. Sophomores Julia Feiss and Elizabeth Behrins lead the Pioneers with 18 goals apiece, while sophomore Kendra Lanuza has a team-best 26 total points with 12 assists to go with 14 goals. Senior goalkeeper Maddy Stevenson has been the Pioneers' primary netminder, allowing just 7.77 goals per game with a save percentage of .467.

Denver's Liza Kelly is in her 12th season with the Pioneers and 16th overall as a head coach, and the team's win vs. Vermont on March 12 was the 200th victory of her career.

Temple and Denver are meeting for just the second time in program history. The Pioneers won the first meeting, 12-9 in Denver in a non-conference game during the 2014 season. Glassford was the only current Owl to play in that contest, recording a draw control and a ground ball.
