Mahoney to Join Bethlehem Steel FC
3.3.17 | Men's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Local club Bethlehem Steel FC announced on Friday morning the signing of Temple's Matt Mahoney to a professional contract. The contract offering was presented following a successful trial from the defender during the club's preseason camp. The deal is currently pending league and federation approval.
"I could not be more excited for Matt," said head coach David MacWilliams. "He has given so much to our program in the last four years and I know he will continue that success with the Bethlehem Steel program."
In a release from the club, Mahoney expressed his excitement for the opportunity. "It's been an amazing experience ever since I joined on trial, the team has welcomed me into their family," Mahoney said. "The team is growing a really great program here and I'm looking forward to being a part of it."
Mahoney leaves behind a strong legacy from his four years as a Temple starter. Playing in every single match throughout his career, the two-year captain helped lead record-breaking back lines and posted three goals and four assists across 73 total games. In the last two seasons, Mahoney was a key player in back-to-back 10-win seasons that allowed only 11 goals at home and an unbeaten home slate in 2016.
"My time at Temple has been incredible," Mahoney said. "I really look forward to taking everything I've learned in my four years to the next level."
In the classroom, Mahoney also made a strong stand for the Owls. In each year Mahoney was on campus, Temple men's soccer received the NSCAA College Team Academic Award. Personally, Mahoney has been a three-year member of Temple's Director's Honor Roll for having a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Owls will be facing Mahoney's future club in a spring scrimmage tomorrow afternoon. The match will be held at the Power Training Complex in Chester, Pa. beginning at 12 p.m.
