4.11.17 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - Temple lacrosse will put its four-game win streak and undefeated home record on the line as the Owls host new BIG EAST member Butler on Wednesday, April 12 at 3 p.m. Temple (11-2, 4-1) is facing the Bulldogs (1-12, 0-5) for the first time in program history, as the Butler program only began in 2017.
Prior to the game, the Owls will honor a number of "MVP" Temple professors, chosen and invited by student-athletes on the team.
Temple has won four straight games, and is undefeated at home this season with a record of 6-0. Most recently, the Owls came from behind to defeat city and BIG EAST rival Villanova, 13-11 on April 8. The Owls are 11-2 overall, marking their best start since the 1997 season. That team ultimately finished 14-3 and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals.
Senior attacker Brenda McDermott has notched four straight hat tricks and leads Temple with 28 goals and 29 assists (13th in NCAA Division I) for 57 total points. Her 4.38 points per game rank second in the BIG EAST, while her 2.23 assists per game rank third. The Owls came back from three goals down vs. Villanova, and from four goals down in an 11-9 win at Cincinnati on April 1. McDermott scored all three of her goals in that win during a 6-0 closing run as the Owls completed the comeback. The first of McDermott's four straight hat tricks came in a 17-16 overtime victory against Marquette on March 25 in the Owls' BIG EAST home opener, in which she scored the OT game-winner.
Senior Carly Demato tallied her fourth hat trick of the season with three goals in the Villanova win, and scored twice at Cincinnati including the game-winner. Sophomore Amber Lambeth, who went scoreless in her freshman year, had two four-goal efforts in the opening two games which were both wins for the Owls. Lambeth currently ranks tied for second on the team with 21 goals this season. Demato is right there with 21 goals as well, while senior Anna Frederick is fourth on the team with 20 goals, followed by Glassford and junior Nicole Barretta with 19 each.
Freshman goalkeeper Maryn Lowell tied her career high with 11 saves in Temple's 11-9 win at Georgetown, and was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on April 4. Lowell has played the last three complete games, and is 8-1 in the cage this season.
Two-time BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week, senior Morgan Glassford, has a team-best 61 draw controls and ranks third in the league with 5.08 draws per game. During the first half of the Villanova win on April 8, Glassford became the all-time career leader at Temple in draw controls, and has now recorded 162 career draws.Â
Butler is a brand-new program in 2017. The Bulldogs earned their first-ever win on March 8 at Gardner-Webb, but have not won since and are 0-5 in BIG EAST play. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Haley Hallenbeck leads Butler with 22 goals and 31 draw controls, while freshman attacker Journey Fischbeck has a team-best 12 assists.
