Howard Earns Bronze at 2017 American Outdoor Track & Field Championships
5.14.17 | Women's Track and Field
HOUSTON, TX - Temple women's track and field closed out the 2017 season at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted at the University of Houston this weekend. Six Owls toed the line at the Tom Tellez track across seven events and will return to Philadelphia with a bronze medal courtesy of Millie Howard.
Howard advanced to the 800-meter race finals on the first day of competition, taking first in her heat in the trial round. On Sunday, the Yorkshire England native earned a spot on the podium for her third-place finish. Howard clocked a small personal best time of 2:08.32 ahead of five of the top-eight 800-runners in the conference, hoping to qualify for NCAA East regionals. Susan Aneno of UConn and Rosie Chamberlain of UCF finished first and second, respectively.
On Saturday, Jimmia McCluskey competed for the last time in a Temple uniform as she took on the long jump and 100-meter dash. She ended her jumping career with a leap of 5.70 meters (12). In the 100-meter preliminary race, the senior finished in 12.25 - not quite making it into the finals.
Saturday's 3000-meter steeplechase was run by Grace Moore and Katie Pinson. Moore managed to finish 11th out of 18 in 11:04.45, while teammate Pinson dropped out of the race after a devastating hurdle landing.
Temple action began on Sunday with the high jump featuring Crystal Jones. Despite the anticipation of matching last year's second-place show, the sophomore was not able to clear the first height of 1.60 meters due to nagging injury. Katie Leisher rounded out the Owls' competition in the 5000-meter run. The Manchester, Md. native crossed the finish line at 17:56.70 (27).
In team rankings, the Owls finished 11th.
"Our lack of depth and ongoing injuries throughout the season are really what led to our downfall this weekend," said head coach Elvis Forde. "It was a difficult weekend overall for all of us. Most times disappointment breeds a determination to work harder and I believe our team will now have that determination moving forward to set an expectation for next season."
