Men's Cross Country Wins Temple Invitational

9.1.17 | Men's Cross Country

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's cross country opened the 2017 season with its first team win in over a year on Friday at the Temple Invitational. Graduate student Marc Steinsberger and freshman Kristian Jensen were Temple's top finishers coming in second and third places, respectively.

Keys to the Race
> Steinsberger and Jensen ran as a pair in second and third place throughout the entire 8K race and crossed the finish line together, only after Tulane's Emmanuel Rotich.
> Steinsberger finished the 8K in a time of 26:10.6, Jensen in 26:10.7
> Seven other Owls were able to close the gaps and finish one after another within the top 13, helping Temple garner enough points to take first place overall.

Race Notes
> Newcomers Jensen and Anton Harssen (8th) ran their first collegiate race in the United States.
> The Temple Invitational served as a preview of Belmont's course for conference members Tulane and ECU before the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted at Belmont Plateau on Oct. 28.
> The course at Belmont Plateau was designed by former Temple cross country/ track and field head coach Jack Saint Clair and began being used for college competitions in 1963.

Quotable
"Our first day of competition is an opportunity for us to see where everyone is after a summer off. We took the strategy of running a little more controlled early on in order to progress through the race. The course is super challenging with steep hills so it rewards runners who are patient. We used today as a stepping stone and as the season progresses, the goals set themselves. I believe we have the most talented group that we have ever had. We want to contend for the championship and I know we'll be well prepared when the time comes." – head coach James Snyder.

Up Next:
The Owls will next compete at the Rider Invitational on Sept. 15 in Lawrenceville, N.J.
