9.14.17 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer looks for a win this weekend as the squad heads to Fairfield (3-3) for a Saturday night match. The Owls will take on the Stags on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.

Scouting the Owls
>Temple is looking for its second win of the season, with a 1-3-1 record. Its first and only win of 2017 was a 1-0 victory at Villanova on Aug. 29.
> Last weekend, the Owls fell to St. John's 2-0 at the Red Storm's Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
>Seniors Mark Grasela and Joonas Jokinen remain Temple's lone goal scorers so far in 2017. Jokinen holds two (Saint Joseph's and Delaware). Grasela scored his first career goal at Villanova.
>Grasela was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week and listed on the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for his game-winning goal at Villanova.
>Jokinen is Temple's leading returning goal scorer, logging three goals, six assists, and 12 points as a junior.
>The Owls are looking to test out different formations in order to best capitalize on opportunities at Fairfield.

Scouting the Stags
>Fairfield will enter Saturday's match 3-3 overall coming off a 2-1 win over Robert Morris on Sept. 10
>The Stags opened the season with a 2-0 win at Oregon State. The squad suffered three losses to Portland, Army West Point, and Hartwick, but topped Lafayette 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 4.
>The team returns its top three scorers from 2016: Ben Wignall, Diego Casielles, and Steven Valente. The trio accounted for nearly half of the team's total points last season (26 of 53) with Wignall leading the way. The forward posted a team-best five goals with one assist in his 17 appearances, the team's only student-athlete who reached double figures. Casielles was a top distributor in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) last year with six assists, placing sixth in the conference in assists per game (0.35). Valente rounded out the top three scorers with seven points, registering a pair of goals and three assists in his 16 games played.
>The Stags finished 2016 with a 5-9-3 record overall, 3-6-1 in the MAAC.

The Series
>Temple first played Fairfield in 2016. The Owls lead the series 1-0 so far after last year's 4-0 victory at the Temple Sports Complex. One of Temple's four goals came from Jokinen, while then senior Jorge Gomez Sanchez scored three.
