CINCINNATI — Temple women's soccer (6-7-1, 2-2-1 AAC) battled in a 110-minute double overtime contest on Thursday night, tying Cincinnati (6-7-3, 1-4-2 AAC) 2-2.
Keys to the Match
> Cincinnati got on the board first, as Vanessa DiNardo scored in the 24th minute off a Jill Vetere assist.
> Temple entered the second half at a 1-0 deficit, but Gabriela Johnson netted the equalizer in the 54th minute. Johnson shook her defender at the top of the box, fired a shot and found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
> The Owls struck again in the 63rd minute. Natalie Druehl picked off a Cincinnati pass near midfield, took it up the center and targeted Emma Wilkins to her right. Wilkins controlled the pass and finished to tally her sixth goal of the season and give Temple a 2-1 lead.
> The Bearcats posted the tying goal in the 75th minute off the boot of their leading scorer, Jill Vetere, assisted by Camryn Hartman.
Match Notes
> Emily Keitel set up a scoring opportunity in the 91st minute. Keitel served a soaring free kick in to the box and Wilkins made a run to make a play on the ball. The Bearcats' keeper stepped out just in time to make the save.
> In the 94th minute, Kelcie Dolan made a key team save to prevent a Cincinnati golden goal. The Bearcats' Madison Lindsay launched a header on net, but Dolan was well-positioned on the goal line to thwart the attempt.
> Johnson was challenging the Cincinnati back line throughout the game, and notably in the second overtime period. On two separate occasions, Johnson went 1-on-3 with Bearcats defenders. The second instance in the 110th minute was the most threatening, as Johnson charged at the keeper, who contested just in time to stop her momentum.
> Morgan Basileo made several strong plays to stop the Bearcats' attack. In the 36th minute, she spoiled a Cincinnati corner kick, punching the ball out of the box. Basileo saved a Hartman header with four minutes left in the second overtime period to keep the match tied 2-2.
> After notching her sixth goal of the season, Wilkins still leads the team in points (12) and goals. Johnson is close behind Wilkins in both categories, as she scored her fifth goal of the season today and also has one assist to total 11 points.
> This match marks the Owls' third overtime contest on the season. The previous two were at Houston and against No. 19 USF. Both matches were decided by golden goals scored by Johnson.
Quotable
"I was very impressed with the team's composure after a long break," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "After going down a goal in the first half, they really battled back. The girls put in a lot of work at practice last week and we are a better team because of it."
